Dear Parents, Students, and Community Members,
The 2022-2023 school year marks my 9th year teaching math at Sheridan High School. Prior to teaching here in Sheridan, I spent 21 years in Alaska teaching math and science throughout the state including the villages of Pilot Point, Nondalton, Chignik Bay and Barrow (Utqiagvik). I was a substitute teacher at Sheridan Schools when the math position opened. I couldn’t resist!
My ties to Sheridan began when I was in elementary school in Butte, Montana. My Aunt lived on the East Bench where I spent many summers working on the farm helping with the day to day operations. My cousins attended and graduated from Sheridan Schools. The Ray Silve Memorial Field is named after a very special cousin of mine.
I graduated from Butte Central High School then proceeded to Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology (Montana Tech) and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. I then attended Western Montana College and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education with Math and Physical Science majors. Lastly, I earned a Master of Science degree in Geoscience from Mississippi State University.
My number one tip for being a successful math student is to attend class regularly (fight NOT to miss class) and do all assigned work to the best of one’s ability.
I would like to address the topic of using Slader/apps (example Photomath) to do homework. The purpose of homework is to help students learn. Getting the "right answer" comes in second. The use of Slader/apps can be two-fold. They can help a struggling student who is giving their best and maybe stuck on a particular step while doing a math problem. In this situation, the app can be a learning resource. On the other hand, if a student is just copying the steps from Slader/app, it deprives him/her of learning the basic principles of problem solving and is considered cheating.
Weekly lesson plans will be posted on my website for those who are absent or simply want to work ahead.
As always, I am available for extra help before or after school or sometimes during lunch if prearranged ahead of time.
I am looking forward to another rewarding and productive year in the math department at Sheridan High School! Test scores have been on the increase and I hope to continue along that path. Please feel free to e-mail or call me if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Gasper
